‘My Mother Told Me’: Two Women’s Point of View on Home and Work <br/>“Mi mamá me platicó”: punto de vista e historia reciente

Abstract

I take the analytical category of point of view from literary criticism, and use it to understand how an individual’s life story is socially constituted. The article focuses on interviews carried out with a worker from a small mill town and a teacher in Mexico City, both of them born at the start of the 20th century. I try to understand how class and gender, on the one hand, and inherited values and new experiences, on the other, have shaped their social relationships and their worldviews. Each woman is quite different from the other, as their points of view reveal, and yet they coincide in a very critical understanding of their society – a critical stance they have passed on to the next generation. El presente ensayo recurre a la categoría de punto de vista, tomada de la crítica literaria, y la emplea para entender la constitución social de la narración de una vida individual. Tomo para el análisis dos entrevistas: una hecha con una obrera textil de una pequeña ciudad, y la otra con una maestra en la ciudad de México, ambas nacidas en la primera década del siglo XX. A través del texto describo cómo clase y género, por un lado, e ideas heredadas y experiencias nuevas, por el otro, conforman sus redes de relación social y su visión del mundo. Los puntos de vista desentrañados revelan a dos mujeres muy diferentes entre sí, pero que sin embargo coinciden en una postura crítica frente a la sociedad en que viven, postura que han legado a la siguiente generación.
